NATIONAL EVENTS
Flagship Events, Lifelong Impact
At UN Youth New Zealand, our flagship national events are where inspiration turns into action. Every year, hundreds of high school students from across Aotearoa come together to learn, lead, and shape the future — gaining real-world skills, building lifelong friendships, and creating lasting change in their communities.
Our three major events — Aotearoa Youth Declaration (AYD), New Zealand Model United Nations (NZMUN), and New Zealand Model Parliament (NZMP) — offer unique, transformative experiences for young people passionate about civic engagement, global issues, and political leadership.
Whether you're collaborating on youth-led policy, stepping into the shoes of a diplomat, or debating laws on the parliamentary floor, each event is designed to empower rangatahi to find their voice and make their mark. You'll learn from experts, meet like-minded peers, and walk away with the confidence and skills to lead change — wherever your journey takes you.
Each flagship event captures the spirit of UN Youth: empowering, educational, and entirely youth-led. No matter your background or experience level, there's a place for you here.

AOTEAROA YOUTH DECLARATION
Aotearoa Youth Declaration (AYD) is UN Youth New Zealand’s flagship civics education conference, where over 250 high school students from across the country come together to shape a youth-led vision for the future of Aotearoa. Held over four days, the event is based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), with additional hubs and workshops hosted nationwide.
Participants are split into policy focus groups, each dedicated to a key area of government such as health, justice, education, and the environment. In these groups, delegates share their lived experiences, learn from expert speakers, and discuss the pressing issues facing their communities. The result is the Aotearoa Youth Declaration — a comprehensive and thoughtful document that reflects the collective voice and values of New Zealand youth.
Once completed, the Declaration is presented to Members of Parliament and relevant decision-makers, providing a unique opportunity for young people to influence public policy and have their perspectives heard at the highest levels.
AYD is more than a policy workshop — it’s a celebration of rangatahi voices, collaboration, and youth-led change. Whether you're passionate about politics, social justice, or just want to make a difference, AYD gives you the tools, support, and community to turn ideas into action.

NEW ZEALAND MODEL UNITED NATIONS
New Zealand Model United Nations (NZMUN) is UN Youth New Zealand’s largest and most prestigious event, bringing together 300 high school students for four unforgettable days in Te Whanganui-a-Tara (Wellington).
At NZMUN, participants step into the shoes of diplomats, representing countries from across the globe in a realistic simulation of the United Nations. In committees ranging from the Security Council to the Human Rights Council, delegates debate pressing global issues, draft resolutions, and collaborate to find solutions to some of the world’s biggest challenges.
But NZMUN is more than just a simulation — it’s a fully immersive experience. With keynote speakers, interactive workshops, cultural exchanges, and social events, students explore international affairs while forming connections that last a lifetime. Whether you're an experienced speaker or trying MUN for the first time, NZMUN is designed to be welcoming, engaging, and empowering.
The event builds public speaking, negotiation, and leadership skills while sparking a deeper understanding of international relations and global citizenship. It’s a chance to meet like-minded young leaders, explore new perspectives, and be part of something bigger than yourself.
If you're ready to step onto the world stage, NZMUN is your launchpad.

NEW ZEALAND MODEL PARLIAMENT
New Zealand Model Parliament (NZMP) gives high school students a hands-on experience of how Aotearoa’s democracy really works. Over three immersive days in Ōtautahi (Christchurch), 200 young people become Members of Parliament — debating real legislation, forming political coalitions, and learning what it takes to represent their communities.
NZMP is designed to demystify our political system and make civic participation accessible, exciting, and real. Delegates are assigned political parties and work in groups to understand their values and goals. From there, they enter Parliament to engage in live debates, amendments, and votes — all guided by a realistic simulation of New Zealand’s parliamentary process.
Beyond the debating chamber, students attend workshops with political experts, hear from guest speakers in public service and activism, and gain insight into how everyday New Zealanders can create change. The programme blends education with real-life skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and negotiation.
NZMP is perfect for anyone curious about how government works — whether you're dreaming of becoming an MP or just want to understand what happens beyond the headlines. It’s empowering, challenging, and full of those lightbulb moments that stay with you long after the event ends.
