North America Leadership Tour

UN Youth is excited to announce the second year of North America Leadership Tour! Previously titled US Leadership Tour, the trip expanded to Mexico and Canada in 2019, and this year we are pleased to be returning to these two new destinations. Running for a month through January and February 2020, the tour will give 14 tertiary-aged students the opportunity to explore a range of industries in San Francisco, Washington DC, New York City, Boston, Mexico City, and Montrèal.

In each city we will meet with groups in a range of sectors including commerce and trade, international relations, technology, human rights, and politics, as well as immersing ourselves in local educational and cultural activities. The delegation will then attend the world’s largest and oldest Model UN event, Harvard Model United Nations in Boston, and put their diplomacy skills gained throughout the tour into action! We’re looking for an enthusiastic, driven, and social group to join us in exploring what opportunities the world has to offer young New Zealanders!

Think this sounds like a bit of you? Have a read of our application pack and apply today!

Applicants MUST be over 18 years, have completed 1 year of tertiary study, and be available to attend a planning weekend in Wellington from Dec 6th-8th.

The delegation will be lea by Co-directors Ihlara McIndoe and Anna Cooper, and will leave Auckland on January 20th, and return to arrive in Auckland on February 24th. Delegates are responsible for organising their own flights both to planning weekend and to Auckland before and after the trip. Anna and Ihlara are responsible for the planning and execution of every aspect of the tour as well as the pastoral care of the delegation while travelling.

Pacific Project

Pacific Project is an annual trip for high school students that educates participants on New Zealand’s relationship with the Pacific. It combines a week at the prestigious UN Youth Australia National Conference with an educational study tour to Vanuatu. Twelve high school students from around New Zealand will be chosen to participate.

The announcement of the Pacific Reset exemplifies the importance of fostering our relationship with our Pacific neighbours. UN Youth is taking part in the Pacific Reset by teaching our youth the importance of remaining connected to the Pacific.

This year, National Conference will be held in Melbourne, and will explore the theme of ‘The Age of Information’.

In Vanuatu we’ll be visiting the New Zealand High Commission, as well as range of NGOs that contribute to development, trade, innovation and combating climate change in the Pacific. Once again we’ll be staying with Alick at his Homestay accommodation in Port Vila – a UN Youth tradition and one of the best parts of Pacific Project. And finally, it wouldn’t be a trip to the Pacific Islands without a chance to head to the beach and spend some time in the sunshine before we return home to the grey winter of New Zealand.

If successful in this round, applicants will be invited to complete an interview. If you’re ready to discover new countries, cultures and communities, apply for Pacific Project.

Evatt Tour

Step up. Challenge yourself. Represent Aotearoa at UN Youth Australia’s premier Model Security Council conference – the Evatt Competition!

The Evatt Competition is run by our mates over in UN Youth Australia. It is a simulation of the UN Security Council (UNSC), one of the principal organs of the United Nations and the body charged with the maintenance of international peace and security. Delegates represent member states in pairs. Each Australian state holds preliminary competitions at various times in the year. The top-performing teams from each state progress to the National Finals, which is held in late November.

UN Youth Australia reserves two team slots (four students) out of the 30 teams in the National Finals for UN Youth New Zealand. We send four secondary school students to compete at the Evatt National Finals.

The aim of a team in the Evatt Competition is simple: achieve their nation’s goals through diplomacy. The arena is the UN Security Council, convened to consider a draft resolution. Each team of two must use all the tools of the Security Council to mould the resolution to advance their assigned country’s interests: formal speeches, amendments, debating, negotiation, parliamentary procedure, and, of course, lots of back-room wheeling and dealing. The students judged the most effective diplomats proceed to the next round.

Additionally, there will be workshops from experts in their field and inspiring speaker sessions. Overall, Evatt educates young people about the world and empowers them as active citizens by developing public speaking, negotiation, teamwork, research, and diplomatic skills.

We are looking for High School students from across the country to represent Aotearoa on the international stage at the 2019 Evatt National Finals from the 25th November – 1st December in Brisbane, Queensland. If this sounds like a bit of you, then make sure you apply. Applications open on Tuesday 13th August, 7:00pm and close Monday 26th August, 11:59pm.

For any questions relating to the Evatt Tour and the competition in general, feel free to get in touch with the Director, Ayush Sharma at ayush.sharma@unyouth.org.nz.
